I’ve been hand lettering for nearly twenty years! I decided to take a foundation course in Calligraphy at Roehampton in South London where I was taught by a very stern taskmaster, under whose tutelage I flourished (literally). I am always writing, doodling, collecting quotes and funny sayings, making cards and generally using up reams of paper.
A couple of years ago whilst teaching a group of calligraphy students, I thought it would be fun to try and write on something other than paper. The college had a ceramics department and more importantly a kiln. We bought a bunch of cheap white tiles and all the students wrote a quote on one. I wrote Shakespeare sonnet 18 – Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day (I wrote each line on an individual tile). These tiles now sit in splendour in the tiled counter top in my larder. A very literary space.
Keen to experiment more, with a birthday round the corner, I was presented with a kiln from my husband.
I always loved to drink my tea from English Bone China (as most tea lovers do). So I thought I would combine my love of Shakespeare, my skill as a calligrapher and my tea drinking ability – and voila a range of English bone china mugs with hand lettering.
I wanted to have a literary theme, so had to start with Mr Shakespeare, I then decided to revisit some of my favourite authors, Lewis Carroll and the rather whimsical lines from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass were an obvious choice. I have added more to the range with witty sayings in brush lettering. I have a number of new designs that I am currently working on and will be sharing those soon.
My bespoke or custom work is growing and I have designed a Thanksgiving Plate, Christening and Wedding gifts, as well as one off pieces with quotes and sayings for special birthday and Christmas gifts. I have written a set of bespoke quotes, wedding invitations, Christmas cards and poetry.
